We know that being able to read when our dogs are under the weather, stressed or anxious is key to being able to help them cope with our crazy world, and to ensure that we are their 'safe place', and prevent any escalation of the kinds of challenging behaviours that come from being unheard or misunderstood.

But, what about our feline family?

If anything, I think that cats are even more susceptible to social stressors than dogs are - and worse, they are experts at hiding their feelings.

And - as we know from our own lives - hidden and suppressed negative feelings are a recipe for disaster - waiting to emerge in ways that present themselves as behavioural problems in our cats (such as aggression, indoor toileting or even self-harm) or health issues, such as urinary tract disorders, or tummy problems.

However, when I talk about cat behaviour, all too often people express surprise ... both that cats really do have strong emotional responses, just like dogs, and even more significantly, that we have the ability to be able to do something about it!

In fact, people often disbelieve me when I tell them that just a few small changes in their own behaviour can make the world of difference to their cat.

  • Get in tune: By learning to read their body language, you’ll feel more in tune with your cat’s emotions and needs. And those you meet or work with, fostering harmony no matter what the situation.

  • Reducing Stress: Understanding your cat can help you identify stressors in their environment, ultimately minimising the risk of potential behaviour problems and even health issues.

  • Insight into Their Nature: Cats are not duplicitous; they’re simply subtle. This series will help you start to appreciate the nuances of their behaviour and see the world from their perspective.

  • Practical Application: The lessons are designed to get you thinking about how you might change your own behaviour to help your cat - with actionable insights that you can start using right away, making everyday interactions with your cat even more rewarding.

  • Stop being rude! So many people tell me that their cat behaves in ways that they wish they wouldn't - suddenly biting them or hiding away, for example - but these behaviours are often inadvertently caused by us, and we can prevent them too.
